Thank you again for your replies @XRaySpeX .

Unfortunately this did not seem to make any difference when I enabled 'service' as you suggest.

I have had to reset the modem a few times during this process when I have not been able to get into the webpage, I am hoping I put the correct settings back in each time. It does look to connect, the modem that is, the dsl light is solid green. The synology router looks to be working too, nothing obviously wrong, just no actual connection. Is there any chance these username/password is wrong or could there be another? I have read that you don't actually even need one as they are not checked, I am not sure about this, but the synology defintely wants a username as a minimum.

I have two routers, and I have tried both with the same problem. So if we rule out the router as the issue. I wonder if its worth looking at the modem, and would it be worth buying a cheap 2nd hand modem and swapping it out?? Are there any good 2nd hand choices perhaps?

Issues connecting Vigor modem with a Synology router

I previously ran a Vigor 130 ADSL/VDSL modem with a Synology RT2600ac router on my EE 80 Mb line without any issues. Unfortunately, about six months ago the line started dropping frequently, and EE asked me to reinstall their own kit (EE Smart Hub Plus – SH31B) so they could run full diagnostics. They eventually replaced the Smart Hub, and I’ve been using that since without problems.

I’m now trying to switch back to my Vigor 130 + Synology setup, but I can’t get it to connect at all. A few things I’ve tried:

Using my original PPPoE username/password from years ago — no connection

Using the generic EE PPPoE credentials listed on their website — still no connection

Swapping in a second RT2600ac to rule out router issues

Reconnecting the EE Smart Hub — works instantly

This makes me think the line and router are fine, and the issue is either the modem (the Vigor 130 is getting old now) or something has changed in EE’s authentication or line configuration since the diagnostics.

Questions:

Has anyone successfully used a Vigor 130 + Synology router on an EE FTTC line recently?

Does EE still accept PPPoE with generic credentials, or have they changed something?

Could the Vigor 130 simply be too old now, and if so, what modem would you recommend as a replacement?

Is there anything obvious I might be missing in the setup?

Thanks for reading — any advice appreciated.

Yes, EE accepts the generic BT PPPoE creds bthomehub@btbroadband.com/BT

Can you get at settings for the Vigor? If so, does it have any for VLAN ID (=101)? Does the Synology?

When using the EE router, it is connected to a BT phone socket, possibly via a dangly filter?

Thanks for the reply @XRaySpeX . In answer to your questions, the wire plugs directly into the wall socket currently. Is that correct for your own kit?

I do have access to the vigor, well, I will need to dig it out again. I did put the PPPoE settings in the Vigor and then Synology. I am not sure on the VLAN ID, I will need to check.

I finally had a chance to have another go today. I reset the modem using the pin on the rear. The modem looks to connect. I can then access the router via a wired connection on the laptop. However I cannot get the router to accept any combination of username and password (also tried no password, old password, whats on the EE website etc). If it was working I would see a green 'connected' signal in the synology, but hangs at 'connecting'. It must be a settings somewhere I have overlooked. I had to move back to the EE kit as the family were looking mutinous without the internet.

I previously ran a Vigor 130 ADSL/VDSL , this sentence said everything should work with VDSL2 change in settings , probably you are still using the old VDSL as original setup as your modem should be able to use vdsl2.
