topic call 30 days before Contract ends. Unfair in Broadband & Landline

My contract ends on December 5, and I called today Decemeber 3 to ask what happens after it ends. To my surprise, I was told it will renew automatically and I’ll be charged for another month. I’m leaving the country in 5 days, yet they’ll still deactivate the service and charge me. It doesn’t make sense — none of the emails I’ve received over the last two months mentioned the need to call 30 days in advance, and there’s no option in the app to cancel the contract. All the reminders said was that my contract would end and suggested upgrading.

Customer service says it’s policy, but it feels like a scam policy, especially for people who aren’t from here. I mean, who remembers to call 30 days before for a contract from two years ago? What a scam and an unfair practice. I’m glad I’m leaving EE.

These BB contracts don't just end, just the min. term expires. They are not fixed term contracts. After the min. term they just carry on at the non-discounted price on a rolling 30-days' notice basis until you explicitly migrate, cancel or upgrade.

The same contractual structure that EE use, is standard across the entire telecoms industry.

You agree a rolling contract which has a 30day notice period anytime, but has a minimum-term. The concept of "renewing" is widely misunderstood, when no "renewal" is necessary.

If you negotiate a new time-limited discount, those often come with new minimum-terms, but otherwise you can give 30days cancellation notice anytime once the minimum-term (sometimes called "commitment period") has ended.

Unfortunately that article is regarding mobile contracts (notice SIM & PAC). More to the point is Thinking of leaving EE:

Leaving EE Broadband

We need 30 days' notice to cancel your EE broadband. We'll stop your service 30 days after you cancel and let you know your contract has ended.
