EE broadband smart hub plus 2.4GHz 5.0GHz

hi,

i can see some of the devices are connecting to 2.4GHz and some to 5.0GHz

but on my wi-fi option, there’s only 1 and doesn’t specify 2.4 or 5.0

i need to use 2.4 connection to set up my air purifier… and not sure why my macbook is connected to 2.4 instead of 5.0.

is there anyway i can split it and have option of choosing which one to connect?

my broadband is Smart Hub Plus

With the EE Smart Hub Plus, you cannot separate the wireless bands/SSIDs. The most you can do is on the Advanced > Wireless Settings page to temporarily disable the 5 GHz WiFi band & move off the Smart channel while connecting problematic 2.4 GHz devices.

Hi @birdfoodeater

Your router is wifi 6 which means it uses both spectrums hence your device connects to whichever is the best one for it to use.

Your air purifier should connect as normal but some older devices don't work well with wifi 6 or the new security. There is normally an option under the settings to temporarily limit the connection to 2.4 to allow older devices to connect although i am not sure on your router.

@XRaySpeX might be able to offer more help on this issue.

I'm trying to do this, I figured it was in the EE Smart Router app where you manage your Wi-Fi settings? Or are you referring to the actual physical router? I'm trying to connect a BG smart plug but the app keeps telling me that my phone is connected to 5 GHz and to log out and connect to the 2.4 GHz version.

@Confused324 you need to login to the router and turn off the 5Ghz wi-fi signal to then have your smart plug try to connect. once finished turn the 5ghz signal back on. Don't think that you can use the app to turn it off.

Hi @XRaySpeX .

To aid my understanding, could you please let me know why using the 2.4GHz compatible network would not have been a good option in this case?

And btw do you know whether WPA2/WPA3 transitional is the default for the main network on the Smart Hub Plus? Or is it WPA3?

@Dabmonger : Cuz my post you are replying to is over 1.5 years old. Then the SH+ had no Compatible WiFi, now it has.

Before posting I checked to see whether compatible wifi had been added as a new feature, or whether it was available from outset with the SH+.

I normally double check search results and AI, but on this occasion I took it as fact! 😖

Should 5GHz capable WPA2 devices be connected to the main network with WPA2/WPA3 transitional selected?

I'm confused @XRaySpeX, as without making changes I had a 5Ghz capable WPA2 old bedroom TV connected fine. I'm assuming it was on the main network.

I contacted EE support by chat, and before I knew it he had RESET my hub and pushed an engineer visit my way.

The main network SSID & password were put back to what I had, but the old TV would no longer connect. I had the choice of changing the main network to WPA2/WPA3 transitional and/or resetting up the compatible network - I did both, and the TV connected fine to the main network.

I decided to reset settings to recommended settings to see what would happen, and it leads to WPA2/WPA3 transitional being applied, and the composite network deactivated!

For interest and additional info, I just laid out my experiences with respect to the original set up, the set up after a reset, and the set up after selecting the recommended settings.

@XRaySpeX, I hope you can still check, as I'm totally confused as to possible inconsistencies in these settings between new router, reset router, and router with recommended settings.

I've certainly NOT managed to answer my question! 🙂

@Dabmonger : The default setting after you do a factory reset is the answer you want. I believe this is what you are calling "recommended".

I believe you have by factory resetting it.

I don't want to factory reset it overwriting my own settings but I'm sure the main network started off as 1 of the WPA3's, either WPA3-Personal or WPA3-Personal-Transition. I don't see any WPA2/WPA3 for the main network & only WPA/WPA2 for the Compatible network. What is the f/ware level of your SH+?

@Dabmonger Full Factory reset once applied, just going to have to go and see what holds or does not, and what then can be adjusted for use, think that you will find the main wi-fi cannot be lowered out off the wireless security mode anymore!
