Moderate NAT: UPNP not succesful - PS5&XBox - WiFi 7 Router

Hi,

I've seen a few threads taking about this but it seems that they've never been resolved. I game using PS5/XBox and since upgrading from BT to EE have been hit with the above problem.

The XBox will display 'moderate NAT UPNP not successful'. If you run the 'Test NAT' a few times it switches to open. So far so good. But the moment you load up an online game, when the runner meets the road, after connecting with Internet services the game, let's say Black Ops 6, displays a moderate NAT (found under Network/ Network Info when in multiplayer) Settings, then going back to the NAT submenu the NAT shows up as a moderate NAT again. It never switches from moderate in game, incidentally. Not once.

The PS5 is absolutely stuck on TYPE 2 - moderate NAT. Nothing will fix it - even temporarily, only on one screen.

I've tried Pinholes, I've tried a static address and port forwarding, I've tried DMZ (though you can only use one device with that so it's relatively narrow as fixes go) : nothing changes it. I haven't had a problem with NAT restriction for near enough a decade.

It might be worth mentioning that on switching on the XBox it takes significantly more time to connect, using a wired connection no less, for the XBox to connect through the router to the Internet. Again this problem only exists on the new router.

So my obvious question is: is this, as others suggest, a firmware issue? Or is this a problem that can't be fixed. Because honestly this is a deal breaker for me. A restricted NAT affects who you can matchmake with, how long it will take - as a result - to find a game, whether certain services work as intended. This simply isn't good enough and I'm honestly desperate for some sort of solution.

Have you got the new Hub Pro? Because I don’t think UPnP is working properly on it. I had the same issues with you with my XBOX. Picked up a new router recently to replace it and it works fine, open NAT. I’ve never been able to get anything better than a type 2 with my PS5. Tried a static IP and port forwarding and placing it in the DMZ but no changes. I haven’t found anything online to help either.

I don’t have the same specific XBox NAT issue, but do have serious problems with UpNp and port forwarding on the Smart Hub Pro - it simply isn’t working as the old BT router did.

I’ve raised the issue with EE support and a firmware update was pushed out just before Christmas, but it hasn’t fixed the issues.

The SH Pro won’t recognise UpNp requests from my security cameras that are connected to it via a switch and the “Firewall” tab in “Advanced Settings” does not contain any entries at all attributed to UpNp, it only lists the port forwarding rules I’ve created, and then it exhibits the same behaviour described earlier in this thread, it won’t resolve external domain named port URLs over WiFi from my mobile phone or laptop, it will resolve them via cellular if I turn WiFi off on the phone, it’s just bizarre!

My Xbox takes an "age" to connect and gives a moderate NAT type and unsuccessful UPnP connection. It seems port forwarding doesn't work so no point in trying that. It would be nice if they acknowledged the issue as it's not fit for purpose if your purpose is Xbox or Playstation gaming, or cameras... Regretfully I have disposed of my old router so a new one is on the way.

Can confirm UPnP personally never worked on an Xbox for me either on the EE SH Pro, however it did not seem to cause any issues for any of the gaming devices in the household despite a moderate NAT.

Still offered a better experience overall than the BT SH2 did, but that is entirely anecdotal.

After a nicer call to customer service and a guy called Tom it turns out I had been sent the wrong router, which i'm told is common for "legacy" customers switching over. Spoke to him Wednesday, new router arrived this morning so can't fault them there. Slightly smaller and with a perforated skirt, this one also has a phone socket on back so no need for the plug socket type anymore. Switched it on and my Xbox instantly connected, NAT open and I'm assuming UPnP is now working as intended. Night and day with my call centre experiences, first told nothing wrong with router and things take time to warm up etc, gaslighted by a manager also. I had mentioned that there was much on the forums about the subject so that may have helped with the follow up, but regardless they delivered and resolved my issue.

Link should you need to anything else that is compatible with the older Router.

https://ee.co.uk/help/broadband/getting-started/compare-our-range-of-broadband-hubs

I've just posted in another thread that the latest firmware for SH31B seems to have fixed UPnP (3.8.11). It wasn't working prior to this.

I have this exact issue with my XBSX. All of the same problems with the EE Pro hub on 1.6Gbps bb.l

-Turning xbox on, takes 20 seconds or so to connect online

-Network settings on XBSX show uPnP not available and NAT: Moderate

- NAT test a few times changes it to Open in game NAT settings show Moderate

-Issues Matchmaking or joining friends games.

**Additional issues**

- Webpages on my phone, tablets etc take up to 10 seconds to load... Youtube videos the same with buffering here and there...

-Router > My network doesn't show all devices i know to be connected, and even "Show Disconnected" filter shows 0 on all ports / wifi bands. The EE app > manage network i can see every device connected or not. Very frustrating and I have seen nothing but the same issues repeated across the board. Blatantly an issue with the router but EE don't seem to be acknowledging? I could be wrong.

Had ZERO issues on my old 900mb BT Smarthub 2... xbox always connected to Internet even when it was powered off / in sleep, which was handy for remote installs etc. Now I cant do that because it seems as soon as its turned off, the router disconnects it.

My XBSX has been set to DMZ and I have a DDNS setup for servers but that shouldn't be causing issues as I had it the same on my old router.

If i plug in my old router, it works just fine.. EE, Please sort this out
