Poor ethernet performance

Hi all

I’ve noticed recently I get much higher speeds over WiFi than I do Ethernet which I find strange (tested with a 2.5gb port laptop, get about 600mbps max) . I’ve had a look at the technical log and it seems Ethernet port 2 seems to go up and then down again multiple times. Could this indicate a faulty ports?
For reference a network switch is connected to the Ethernet port.

Over WiFi 6e I’m able to get 900mbps on my phone but no where near this over Ethernet.

@Colesey what speed/spec is the switch and cable connecting it? Do you get the same if you move to another port?

Do you get better speeds on the laptop with the switch disconnected?

Could be a finicky cable/connection somewhere in the chain? Was the laptop wired to the hub or the switch when you tested? Worth trying both to see if there's any difference.

Not sure what router you're using, but this is the sort of thing I see over Ethernet on a Smart Hub Pro via two daisy-chained switches: -

Sorry I should’ve added this in my original post but I have the switch connected to the hub via a Moca Adapter as I cannot run Ethernet in my home.
Smart Hub Pro> Moca> Switch (tp link gigabit 5-port)> TV, Box Pro, Smart WiFi Pro extender.

for the last few months I’ve consistently been able to get 900mbps over WiFi when connected to the backhauled WiFi pro but now I get max 300mbps. So not sure if the issue is the moca adapters or a faulty cable somewhere.

when connecting directly to the hub I can get 700mbps max over Ethernet but only around 500mbps when I connect to the switch which is connected via moca.

I know moca isn’t ideal but it’s worked flawless for me for months.regardless shouldn’t I get higher than 650-700mbps when connected directly to the hub?

@Colesey you need to just break it down step by step until you find the issue.

Another Hub port.

Coax connecters.

Move the extender closer with a short ish Cat 6 cable.

And so on.

@Colesey What is the max speed on the Moca Adapter Ethernet port looks like it's a 1Gb/s nic, you may wish to re-organise how it is all done connection wise and remove all the switch connections test all the ports off the switch and bring them on one by one testing as they are connected TV, Next Box Pro etc.

That's (bold) definitely suggestive that the Moca and/or switch/cables are contributing to the problem. I don't have much experience with Moca so can't really comment on its dependability. I know Powerline adapters can be highly variable from one day to the next, but from the little I do understand, Moca is supposed to be more reliable.

700mbps is arguably low when connected directly to the hub, assuming not much else is happening on your network at the time. Are you using a fairly recent laptop and are you confident it can actually do 900mbps wired? i.e. have you seen it doing this when connected to another network/environment?

As another tool in your belt: unplugging the TV box temporarily and cabling a laptop to your extender should give a reasonable indication of what the extender wired backhaul speed is. Every device wirelessly connected to the extender is going to be limited by whatever this currently is.

Yeah I’m going to do some more tinkering today to see if I can get the speeds up. If not I’ll try replacing the coax cables and see if that makes any difference.
Frustrating as it’s worked perfectly for months and I’ve not changed anything in the setup.

Unfortunately moca is not officially supported in the UK (even though you can buy the adapters here). They do need good grade copper coax to be installed and mostly in UK homes we have either low grade copper or even worse aluminum coax.

So I’ve managed to reconnect everything and can say I’m getting over 900mbps from one of the switch ports that’s connected by Moca….great.

However, despite feeding an Ethernet cable into the Smart WiFi Pro extender that the laptop confirms is transferring a 1gb connection, I can only get 200-300mbps when connecting via my iPhone 15 pro max on the 5ghz band.
when connecting on the 6ghz band my connection rockets up to 900mbps plus!! I know 6ghz is faster than 5ghz but surely i should be able to achieve more than 200-300mbps on 5ghz when there’s nothing going on in my network. Starting to annoy me now this.

@Colesey Have you tried any other device on the 5Ghz band, would analyse that you are indeed latching on to the Extender by looking at the mac address, and not jumping down to the router. 2.4 strongest 5 weaker, and 6 weakest off all.
