There's no reason why you shouldn't turn you router off for extended periods while you're away as long as you don't do it too frequently.

hi i think it says EE smart hub on the back, and i know i have a slow speed - cost was important as a pensioner! i have tried to find out more about security issues but to be honest, i have just about worn out my brain with all the information!! i don't think the neighbour would use it, probably has a faster one himself but when i realised my vulnerability i started to get paranoid!

Iris, if you’re really worried, what about changing the WiFi password (and keeping a secure note of it, maybe with the router setting “card”)?

Hi Iris

There’s 2 passwords for your router. Both are in the pull out card on the back. The Admin password is needed to change certain advanced settings in the router.

The WiFi password is needed to connect new WiFi devices to your network. This is the one you’ll have given the neighbour when he set up your doorbell. Changing the WiFi password ensures no one can connect without the new password. EE assume if you’ve connected anything to your router with an Ethernet cable to one of the sockets at the back it’s you doing it, so passwords don’t apply to Ethernet connections (eg, your TV if it’s connected that way).

Changing it means putting in the “192. etc” address Jim gave you into a browser (like Chrome) on your phone or computer. That displays Hub Manager. Passwords can be changed there, or via the EE app if you have it in your phone.

If your neighbour seems a decent chap and you’re a bit unsure about all this, you might want to leave well alone. But I would suggest looking at it as that shows you what wifi devices are connected to your network. It may name them or list them by a long number. If you don’t have a lot of wifi stuff you may be easily able to see what’s on. The important thing, if you’re unfamiliar with this stuff is just to look, and not change anything.

But as I say, and you might be thinking the same way, if your neighbour seems a decent chap you may be worrying unnecessarily. But don’t hesitate to shout out if you’re still bothered or need help.

I've realised that if I turn the router off then I won't be able to get any
notifications from my ring doorbell, so I'll have to shelve it for the time
being. Thanks for the info though.x

Yes, We’re the same. We have to leave the router on for our Hive stuff (heating, lights, plugs etc).

But I do keep an eye on what’s on our network.

thanks to everyone who responded with advice about this question, I have been under pressure this week with worrying about it and with the funeral of a close friend, and trying to get sorted for a Christmas break. (I never have a single issue to deal with!) I hope that I'll have chance in the next few days to read them and try them to see if I can work them out. My ideal will be to find where users show up so that I can keep a check on it . Again, thanks to all - I've taken photos of the replies to study them. Merry Christmas to you all x
