Fibre to property

Hello. On my broadband, I'm currently only able to get 20 Mbps down and 1 Mbs up as I think I'm on Fiber to Cabinet, and then copper wire to the home. Is it possible to put in a request to Openreach so that they will install, or provide a quotation to install, fibre to my home?

Hi Setters

Do you know that fibre to the premises is available in your area? There are several postcode checkers you can use.

I'd registered an interest back in my BT days but the first indication of any progress was seeing Openreach guys pulling fibre cable up the street’s pavement ducting. I placed the order straight away.

@Setters out of curiosity, how much are you willing to pay to have a personal install of fibre to your home if it’s not available in your area yet for a standard connection. The company I work for originally was paying £1200 a month for such a thing and this was way way before any rollout of fibre. 4 lines two spare and two for backup. seems crazy now to pay that amount but this was a personal install for the company I’m at. While it might be cheaper now to have such a thing it’s not going to be cheap at all and open reach will have a roll out plan for your area.

At those speeds it looks more like ADSL (copper all the way) than FTTC.

What does BT Wholesale Broadband Availability Checker estimate for your phone number? Post just the whole table and the line above it, blanking out your phone number. If it doesn't recognise your phone number or you don't have one, use the Address Checker.

Good point. Reminds me when “broadband” first came out. IIRC, to switch from 56k dial up to 0.5 Meg “broadband” BT charged me £250 engineer visit and £50pm !!

Conversely, a few years on, they charged same to switch me from 65meg FTTC to Fibre 100. Then, within days of the FTTP instal, they offered Fibre 900 for £1pm extra! That took about a nanosecond 😉

Current connection is 1800 times faster than that long gone half meg ADSL deal, for not much more in actual ££, significantly less once inflation is taken into account.

Hi Chris. I thought maybe they would quote a few thousand pound installation fee for me to consider. I moved in a few weeks ago and work from home also, so it would be a good investment for me if it didn't cost silly money.

Yes, you do have slow FTTC there. There are no plans for Full Fibre (FTTP) .

@Setters To check if Openreach have plans for your property enter your details on their checker - https://www.openreach.com/fibre-checker

If none are shown you should register your interest and they will let you know when they do have plans.

You could also try the Ofcom checker to see if other providers have anything available https://checker.ofcom.org.uk/
