I was happily using Fritz!Box 7590 as my main router for my EE Fibre broadband, but recently when I had to renew the contract I got told that my landline will become VOIP.

Fair enough to EE as they sent me a new router, for free, even I would have preferred to use my own Fritz!Box. So long story short, my basic landline phone works only with EE SmartHub Plus after I had to connect to it directly. But I can't find any instructions how users could set this up with third party routers.

Does anyone have tried to do the similar with Fritz!Box? The furthest I got myself was to get a signal on a phone but when rung to number from mobile it went straight to answering machine and never rang out.

That said, if you do crack it, I am sure many people will be grateful.

You can't from another router. For DV you must have the EE SH+ as the 1st router facing the WAN & to take the phone from its phone port or a supplied digital adapter..

If what's you are saying is correct, then is that not against the rules? They are technically locking us of using only their hardware, even there is other hardware options in the market which might work better(in theory). How can it is different to using a third party router for broadband only? They are giving config settings for them for that exact reason, so users can use their own routers.

What rules? EE is keeping confidential its proprietary VoIP implementation. So other routers would be unable to incorporate it.

@bobpullen : I remember Sky at 1 time would not allow use of generic routers & would not provide the necessary info. to configure it.

Unfortunately EE are a really great company and either force you to use their Hub which has unreliable firmware coded by highschoolers or you're forced to use a router released in 2017 (BT Smart Hub 2) which is a bit more reliable but the WiFi is meh. Only options if you have VoIP.

Apologies for not starting a new thread but my question is related to the above. I am thinking about migrating to EE and I have a Fritz!box mesh set up that works very well. My router has a VOIP connection to AAISP. Would I right in assuming that any VOIP connection other than to the EE digital voice service will work without any issues? Thanks.

See for third party router settings, though always good to have the EE router handy if your line ever develops a problem.
https://ee.co.uk/help/broadband/getting-started/using-and-configuring-a-third-party-router
