How to assigna Static IP Address

Hi.

I've recently got EE Full Fibre 900 to the property. When I was discussing this option with staff at EE, over the phone (names and email addresses obtained) I was told, with confidence, that I could get a static IP address which is important for work purposes. I was going to go with BT to obtain this, but was messed around that much I decided to go with EE, especially seeing I was told that one static IP address could be obtained.

I'm looking for further information on how to implement this as the IP address has already changed twice and this is just not acceptable after being told, when purchasing the subscription and service, that a static IP address is attainable.

Hi @MattHugo81,

Sorry, both EE and BT home broadband services use dynamic, rather than static IP addresses.

So, why was I given false advertising by EE and your colleagues then?

I wish to speak to someone about this, otherwise, I will be cancelling my services. I spoke directly to a technical engineer, who even left me on hold to check with 'his boss' to make sure that a static IP address could be assigned, to which I was told it could. I have the name and email address of this individual. The primary reason why I said I would pay for the EE broadband service.

Trouble is that the non-BB-expert that you speak to on CS don't know the diff between a static public external IP you get on the WAN from a fixed private internal IP that you can set on the LAN & mis-interpret a request for a static IP as the latter.

You might get over this issue by employing a Dynamic DNS (DDNS).

they did this with me too (as in checking specifically with engineer when i was setting up the order), very disappointing and was a big factor in signing up to their service.

My sales lady spoke to her manager who also wasn't sure if i could have an external static IP - not really surprising as a sales person - so he then spoke to an engineer while i twiddled my thumbs on hold for 10 mins. was then confirmed this was possible and we agreed to include this in my order etc. unfortunately nothing was included on my first bill (including that my virgin tel number hadnt been ported over either) and i was told the opposite when i called to fix it.

@mjirvine Have you managed to find a work around yet for at least your static IP as there is no way i would think that EE will ever supply that to you, if you did get the virgin number ported, do let the forum know as that could be one of the sticky issues its one of those, i had it when i change over my dad's number, VM were adamant it was there number, until i was extremely curt and told them he had this number for 55 years, and you got it when he joined you 20years ago from BT so give it back, that sorted it out!

@mjirvine google can be a lot more reliable that non technical sales people. That said there is often confusion about the term, many seem to think that assigning a device the same internal ip every time is a static ip!

the number port seems to have been fixed, i have had email confirmation of the number change (though no apology for the original **bleep** up). A manager called me back to confirm she was correct and no chance of a static IP and lies about it not being possible - when clearly it is possible and they choose not to offer the service. I have to decide if this is enough to make me cancel and go through the risk of losing my phone number again or just to let my UDMP do the dynamicDNS update thing which i am fed up with. 😞

With the old BT hub, the dynamic IP address was manageable with DDNS when it worked

Extra cost paying for a DNS provider but they manage my web addresses also so no big deal

Of course BT/EE have now messed this up as their new hub doesnt support DDNS refresh

Very annoyed

Hi Matt, exactly the same here, but I wasn't promised a dedicated IP address, I was offered that Tech support could configure my router to serve a static IP address to allow me to work. On this basis I put my home TV entertainment package with them and my mobile phone. Called then today to get this config done, and simply.... we can't, you can still cancel your broadband service, but then you loose the mobile which is outside cooling off period.... only 10 days in, oh and by the way you would loose your tv package. Only way for dedicated is a business account, but then you can't have an entertainment package assigned to a business broadband service. Basically royally screwed over and lied to..... The guy I spoke with was 'Scot' if you get him, then basically he'll lie for the contract signup and probably a commission. EE seem to think this will go away, but I have asked for a transcript of the initial sales call, so I can challenge and seek all costs and inconveniences and business interruption because of their lying ways .... BE WARE. Absolute shambles and dishonest selling.

You could get a DDNS service.

I currently use one with my EE Smart Hub Plus, settings can be found in "advanced settings, broadband, Dynamic DNS"

Okay ,found this so i decided to help a little.
1 - Go to DuckDns.org and follow the steps to get your completely free dns that will see the changes in your ip address and provide you with a urlthat you can always use, this is basically enough apart for the port forwarding in your router but if you actually want to host your website or more , check advanced down
Advanced !!!
2 - go to cloudflare and create a new account free for your Domain name , add new record cname where yourdomain.com is a alias of yourusername.duckdns.org
and from there you can access your ip even if it changes from your own domain.tld

Everything in this solution is free at no extra cost!

@wdq - a slightly less involved solution would be to register for one of the free DDNS providers that the EE hub natively supports and configure the account credentials in the Hub Manager under Advanced > Broadband > Dynamic DNS. This method also doesn't require you to own your own domain name.

Having a domain name was just a perk as stated in my previous answer .

A DNS address is provided freely by duckdns and offers no limitations .

With the new smart hubs that uses openwrt should work like a charm .

Well anyways everyone Has their own preferences 😜.
