EE's contracts are not fixed-term ones that expire on a certain date, by the same logic all phones would be automatically cut-off on the same date - this would cause substantial volumes of complaints.

Telecoms contracts in the UK are rolling contracts that have minimum terms, which many people confuse with "contract ending". The only time a contract ends is when you explicitly give 30days cancellation notice or port-out with a PAC.

With this in mind, what do you mean by "renewed"?

These mobile contracts don't renew, just the min. term expires. It's still the same contract. They are not fixed term contracts. After the min. term they just carry on at the same price on a rolling 30-days' notice basis until you explicitly cancel, upgrade or port your no. away. There will however be a 10% discount after 3 months. You may always choose to upgrade your contract to a cheaper SIM-Only contract.
