When I upgrade do I keep the same number?

With my contract coming to an end soon I have been weighing up my options, originally I wanted to upgrade to a SIM only plan however I have read the only way to keep my number would require me to switch to another provider first and then switch back however that seems too complicated for me.

If I were to upgrade to another phone plan instead of SIM only would I get to keep my number? Sorry for asking what is probably is a simple question, it’s been a while since I upgraded.

Upgrading means changing your phone and keeping the same number. Equally when you "upgrade" to a SIM-only, this is effectively a change of price-plan - again, you retain the same number as a matter of course.
