Downgrading your plan to Sim Only, once the handset has been 'paid' for...?

I remember when I last upgraded in store they assistant told me that I had 'paid' for my handset and could therefore have upgraded my phone for multiple months... and once that is the case if I contacted EE to tell them I wanted to just keep the handset and switch to a 'sim only' deal, I would have paid considerably less.

No one told me that of course, so I was paying the same monthly amount even though I had paid off the handset and could have switched to a much cheaper tariff, and got the same amount of minutes/texts/data etc.

My question is how long from the initial upgrade/new phone does this happen, as a a customer how can you figure it out when it has happened to - if you want to - switch to a sim only deal and pay much less each month (if you don't want to upgrade at that point)?

@nicholas8607 You can do this when your eligible to upgrade, which is 45 days from the end of your contract term.
You upgrade to a sim only tariff instead of a full device contract. You then use the device you already have.

Only in your upgrade window from 45 days before end of term.
