end of contract swap to sim only

Hi
Nearing the end of my contract and am thinking of swapping to a SIM only deal as the phone works well

However if after a few months of being on a SIM only plan the phone breaks can i then upgrade back to a handset plan with out having to pay the SIM only plan in full/ or fulfil a minimum length term
Would it matter whether it was a 12month or 24 month SIM only.

The upgrade eligibility rules are set out on page-5 of the SIM-only price guide:

I see no reason for the 24month plans to be any different, but it is not documented anywhere.
