My son is now old enough to pay for his own phone. How do I go about splitting the contract between my number and his?

A change of ownership is called for. The current owner, you, of the contract wishing to be moved needs to call CS with both of you available on the line to effect a change of ownership. The other person, son, will need to pass a credit check. They will then be responsible for paying for that contract. If you can't do it together CS will give the current owner a password for the other to quote when they call.

A change of legal ownership, as mentioned above, is the solution for what you probably want to achieve. Be aware that by doing so, you will lose the benefit of data sharing between multiple lines that will not then be on the same billing account - this may or may not be an issue for you.

If you want to retain that benefit, the alternative is simply for your son to make manual payments towards your billing account, to cover whatever amount relates to his phone. Any manual payment made prior to your monthly bill date, will reduce the amount of your bill and thus the direct debit that results.

Having your son's phone in your son's name has the advantage of him starting to build a credit history, which has some long term benefits. Up to you & your so which path to take, considering the pros & cons of each.
