MY EXPERIENCE WITH EE

My experience with EE — something I wish I understood before taking phone contracts as an international student

I’m posting this because I recently had another experience with EE that made me think other students, especially international students who are new to the UK, should understand how mobile contracts work here.

I’m currently an EE customer and I have previously taken two iPhone contracts from them.

When the iPhone 17 series launched, I originally ordered an iPhone 17 Pro Max 512GB from EE. After waiting around two months, I was told that the 512GB version wasn’t available and that I would have to wait another month.

Because I needed a phone, I eventually went into a store and purchased an iPhone 17 Pro 512GB from EE.

Then, literally the next day, the 17 Pro Max 512GB I had originally been waiting for became available in the store.

So I ended up taking both contracts.

At the time, I didn’t really understand how EE’s pricing was structured. I kept seeing the phone advertised with 0% interest, so as someone new to the UK, I understood that as basically meaning I wasn’t paying extra for financing the phone.

What I later noticed was that the monthly cost of the overall package was considerably higher than the SIM/mobile plan itself.

For example, a plan that might be around £20/month could become around £30–£40/month once the phone/device agreement was included.

Obviously, the phone has to be paid for somehow, so I’m not saying that the extra amount itself is unexpected.

My issue is that, in my experience, it wasn’t always immediately obvious how much I was paying for the device and how much I was paying for the mobile service, particularly when looking at the monthly price.

If you’re taking a phone contract, I would strongly recommend looking at the total amount payable over the entire contract, rather than focusing only on the “0% interest” wording or the monthly payment.

I eventually paid off my 17 Pro and decided to buy my next phone directly from Apple.

Now I’ve purchased an iPhone 18 Pro directly from Apple.

Because I’m still an EE customer, I contacted EE Insurance today to ask whether they could insure the new phone.

The insurance representative was polite, but I was told they couldn’t provide insurance because the phone wasn’t purchased from EE.

That surprised me because I’m already an EE customer and have existing contracts with them.

I’ve actually had a good experience with the EE insurance team previously. I made a claim for my 17 Pro and the process was relatively quick and the people I dealt with were helpful. So this isn’t about the individual insurance staff — they were actually nice.

I also have Apple insurance on my new phone, but some of my friends have told me they’ve experienced delays with claims, which is why I was interested in EE Insurance again.

The bigger point for me is this:

If you’re an international student or someone who has recently moved to the UK, don’t assume that “0% interest” automatically means you’ve found the cheapest option.

Before signing a phone contract, check:

* How much the handset costs in total
* How much the mobile plan costs separately
* How much you’ll pay over the full contract
* Whether there are annual price increases
* What happens if you pay the device off early
* Whether insurance is available if you buy your phone elsewhere
* Whether buying the phone directly from Apple and taking a SIM-only plan works out cheaper

I personally wish I had understood all of this when I first arrived in the UK.

I’m not saying nobody should use EE. I’m just sharing my experience because I know there are a lot of international students who arrive here and aren’t familiar with how UK phone contracts are structured.

Would be interested to hear from other EE customers — did you understand the device + airtime pricing clearly when you first took your contract?

Hi @AmsMike16

I am not sure why you're highlighting the international student point as it has no bearing on your issue. I am assuming on your home country you don't have 0% interest or any interest agreements. Under UK law credit agreements are regulated and this should be explained to you at the time of purchase and in your documents, and again you did not need to buy at the time before researching.

EE contracts are split into tariffs and mobile devices devices which is two costs.

As for the insurance point it says here https://ee.co.uk/mobile/insurance

We are only able to insure devices purchased direct from EE; online, in store or over the phone

Some research would have highlighted this. There are hundreds of different gadget and mobile insurers.

Thanks

Hi @Northerner

Hi, I understand your point, and I agree that the terms of a regulated credit agreement should be explained and that customers should read their documents.

The reason I specifically mentioned being an international student is not because I think international students should get different treatment or because I don’t understand that credit agreements exist.

I’m explaining the context of why I misunderstood the way these contracts work.

In India, where I’m from, mobile network providers and phone financing are generally treated as separate things. If you want to buy a phone on finance, there are separate financing/credit options, and the customer is normally shown the cost of the phone, the financing and the mobile service separately. The people selling the SIM/mobile service aren’t necessarily the same people selling you the phone on credit.

So when I first came to the UK and saw a phone being advertised as “0% interest”, I understood that in the normal sense — that the phone finance itself wasn’t charging interest. I didn’t initially understand the relationship between the device agreement and the airtime/tariff in the same way someone who has lived here for years might.

And honestly, when I asked questions in-store, the explanation was basically along the lines of “that’s just what it is” rather than someone sitting down and showing me:

£20 — airtime
£X — device
£X — total monthly payment
£X — total cost over the agreement

I’m not saying the information wasn’t somewhere in the documentation. My point is that having information available in a credit agreement isn’t necessarily the same thing as a customer actually understanding the pricing structure when they’re standing in a shop excited about getting a new phone.

And that’s particularly relevant for international students. Many of us arrive here with no family around to explain how these things work. Back home, in my case, my parents would normally be involved when buying an expensive phone. Here, you’re suddenly managing rent, tuition, bills, credit agreements and everything else yourself.

You see something like “£100/month” and, as a student earning around £1,200 a month, you think:

“Okay, I can afford £100 a month, so I’ll take it.”

You’re not necessarily thinking about the fact that £100 × 24/36 months can become a very significant total commitment.

That’s actually why I paid off my 17 Pro yesterday. From this month, I’m back to paying around £20/month for the mobile service, rather than having the device agreement included in my monthly payments. I did that specifically because I wanted to understand and separate the two costs for myself.

So I’m not saying EE is breaking the law or that customers aren’t responsible for reading their agreements. I’m saying that my experience made me realise how important it is to understand the total cost rather than simply looking at the monthly payment and “0% interest.”

And regarding insurance, I only mentioned that because I’m already an EE customer and had previously had a good experience with the EE insurance team. I was surprised that a phone I bought directly from Apple couldn’t be insured through EE, and I was simply sharing that experience.

That’s the whole point of my post — not “EE is committing fraud”, but “this is something I wish I had understood before signing my first UK phone contract, and maybe other international students should know it too.”

If EE’s terms clearly explain everything, that’s fair. But I still think there’s a difference between something being legally disclosed in a contract and a customer genuinely understanding what they’re paying for.

Hi @Chris_B

Chris, I think you’re missing the actual point of my post.

I never said that customers have absolutely no responsibility. I said the responsibility shouldn’t automatically be placed entirely on the customer simply because they clicked “agree”.

Yes, customers should read the terms and conditions. Nobody is disputing that. But if your argument is simply “you agreed to it, therefore it’s your fault”, then what exactly is the purpose of having trained sales advisors in EE stores?

When a customer walks into a store and asks a sales advisor about a phone, monthly price, Flex and insurance, they’re not just there to collect a box. The sales advisor is there to sell the product and explain the options available to the customer.

If I ask an EE employee, “How much is this phone going to cost me per month?”, I expect a proper breakdown — phone cost, Flex/finance element, airtime, contract period, total amount payable and what happens at the end of the agreement. Saying afterwards that “it was all in the terms and conditions” doesn’t really answer the concern I raised.

And let’s be clear: I never said in my original post that it was entirely EE’s fault. In fact, I openly acknowledged that I should have asked more questions. What I object to is people acting as though the customer having some responsibility means the salesperson and sales process have absolutely none.

That’s not how good customer service works.

There is also something important about the insurance point. I have actually checked EE’s current information after your comment. EE’s standard Full Cover/Damage Cover is for devices purchased directly from EE.

But EE also launched Multi Tech Cover in January 2026, and EE itself says this policy is for eligible devices bought from EE or elsewhere. Mobile phones are specifically included, subject to the eligibility requirements.

So my point isn’t simply “EE doesn’t insure phones bought elsewhere.” That’s too simplistic. The actual question is what insurance options were available to me, what was explained to me in the store, and why wasn’t I clearly informed about the available options?

EE’s current Multi Tech Cover information says eligible mobile phones can be covered even when they weren’t bought directly from EE, provided they meet the policy requirements — including requirements around where the device was purchased and proof of purchase.

That’s exactly why clear communication from a sales advisor matters. If there is an insurance product that could potentially cover an eligible phone purchased elsewhere, customers should at least be told that the option exists and what the eligibility criteria are.

I’m also not expecting an EE employee to read 20 pages of insurance terms to me word-for-word. I’m expecting them to explain the important parts that directly affect my purchase and point me towards the detailed terms if I need them.

I’m an international student from India, and mobile finance and phone sales work differently there. I shouldn’t be expected to automatically understand every EE Flex arrangement just because I have agreed to a contract. That’s precisely where a salesperson should add value.

And honestly, saying “if you don’t understand it, why proceed?” isn’t the kind of attitude I would expect from someone representing a major telecommunications company. If customers don’t understand something, the appropriate response from a salesperson should be to explain it — not simply tell them that their lack of understanding is their fault.

I’m not asking anyone to take responsibility away from customers. I’m asking for shared responsibility, transparency and proper customer service.

Finally, my post wasn’t written to attack EE or an individual employee. I shared my experience because I don’t want another customer to walk into an EE store, hear a monthly price, assume they understand the deal, and only later realise that the structure works differently from what they thought.

If anything, I’m trying to help other customers avoid exactly that situation.

So yes — read the terms. Absolutely. But don’t use “you agreed to the terms” as an excuse to dismiss legitimate criticism of how the product was explained and sold. Those are two completely different things.

Hi @AmsMike16

I think your international student point is doing a lot of the heavenly lifting in these posts.

Your status has no bearing as there are many people who just don't read or understand the contracts they sign especially when it comes to the exchange for something shiny and it is not until later when it dawns on them what they have signed up for they regret or say the sales process was misleading. This happens across many different products.

As I mentioned the sales process on credit is regulated and it is the same for everyone, just because you or anyone else is from abroad you will not receive different service than others. If you were unsure then you should not have signed up rather take away the documents and consider your options or researched before purchase. I think this is the point @Chris_B is making.

If you do not know there is no obligation for any insurers to offer you cover and while you would prefer to use EE they are no obliged to give you cover. There are many other gadget and mobile insurers and maybe if you have content insurance on your home this will also cover.

For whatever reason you feel your experience is because of certain factors which is your opinion . If you are unhappy then you can complain here: https://ee.co.uk/help/contact-ee/complaint

Thanks

Hi @Northerner

Hi,

I think the discussion is still focusing on the wrong part of my post.

I’ve already accepted that I should have researched my previous phone contract more carefully. I’m not denying that, and I’m not saying that being an international student means I should receive different treatment.

I mentioned being an international student because I was explaining why I didn’t initially understand the UK system in the same way someone who has lived here for years might. That’s context, not my main complaint.

My main concern is actually about the information I received from EE and the way my experience was handled.

And now there is something I would genuinely like the EE Community Team to explain.

When I contacted EE Insurance about my iPhone 18 Pro, which I purchased directly from Apple, I was told that EE couldn’t insure it because I hadn’t purchased the phone from EE.

Chris also explained to me that EE can only insure devices purchased directly from EE.

However, I have now checked EE’s own current insurance information and there is a separate product called EE Multi Tech Cover.

EE’s own website states that Multi Tech Cover can cover eligible devices purchased from a UK VAT-registered retailer, mobile operator or manufacturer. EE also announced this product as cover for devices bought “from EE or elsewhere.”

And here is the important part:

I actually have EE Multi Tech Cover, and my iPhone 18 Pro 512GB purchased from Apple is registered on my EE Multi Tech Cover policy.

The attached screenshot is from my EE/Chubb insurance account and shows:

My Multi Tech Cover → iPhone 18 Pro 512GB Burgundy → registered device.

So my question is very simple:

Why was I told that EE could not insure my Apple-purchased phone?

If the representative meant that the standard EE mobile-phone insurance only covers devices purchased directly from EE, then that’s fine — EE’s website does say that.

But that is not the same as saying EE cannot insure a phone purchased elsewhere, because EE’s Multi Tech Cover specifically provides cover for eligible devices purchased elsewhere.

That’s exactly my point about customer service.

If I contact EE and ask whether my Apple-purchased iPhone can be insured, I expect the answer to explain the available options, rather than simply being told “No, because you didn’t buy it from EE.”

If the correct response should have been:

“Our standard mobile insurance only covers EE-purchased devices, but you may be eligible for Multi Tech Cover for an eligible device purchased elsewhere,”

then that is the information I should have received.

I am not claiming that EE has to provide every insurance product to every customer. I’m asking why I was not told about the appropriate EE product when I specifically contacted EE about insuring the phone.

So I would appreciate an answer to that rather than another explanation about me needing to research my contract.

I’ve accepted my responsibility regarding the previous contract.

I’m now asking EE to take responsibility for the information its representatives provided to me about EE’s own insurance products.

Thanks.
