SMS messages failing to send

Hi - I've just got a new business iphone and all contacts have been loaded from my old phone. I am repeatedly getting a 'message failed to send' warning when I was able to message these contacts before. I do not understand why and as these are business messages it is hampering my work efficiency. Any ideas why i suddenly can not message people? I still can from my old phone (iphone X) but i can't from my new phone (iphone 12). It's really frustrating me. It's not every contact - just some.

Do you have iMessages enabled?

There's a possibility your phone is set to use Apple's proprietry iMessage rather than standard SMS, and the contacts failing to send are those not using iOS.
