Unlocking a phone, error message on ee website

I have put the imei number in on the unlock page but it gives an error message. I tried customer services it just says go to the unlock page on the website. I tried putting the number in on a pay to unlock website and it recognises the phone but I don't see why I should pay £15 to unlock it!

@Tmy1 Is the device form EE did you get this device from EE ? Any device sold after 17th of December 2021 are not network locked. If you are copying and pasting the IMEI on the EE website don’t manually type it in with no spaces.

it is an old phone, new in box but old, it is asking for nck code. i tried
the ee unlock but it just says error, i tried a paid unlock and it found
the phone but i dont particularly want to pay to unlock it
