I assume this SIM transfer is for people coming over to EE from another network?

How can a transfer to E-Sim be done for current phones?

What are the implications of converting from a physical SIM to an E-Sim, and what are the advantages?

(Sorry if I'm being dull, I'm just old-school!)

Hey @hawkerpaul.

This isn't for new customers joining the network, but rather existing customers who are switching to a new phone.

At the initial setup of the new handset, just like how you can transfer your personal data like photos and apps, it will give you the option to move your data plan from the SIM in your old phone to an eSIM within the new phone.

This saves you needing to swap SIM cards around, but there's nothing stopping you continuing to use your existing physical SIM instead.

Are there any advantages/disadvantages of an E-Sim over a physical one?

If a phone went over to an E-Sim and this is later upgraded/lost/stolen, presumably the E-Sim can easily be regenerated on the new phone?

The main advantage of eSIM is that it's an additional SIM slot, and if your phone only has one physical slot, it makes the use of foreign or additional SIMs easier.

They have a major disadvantage when it comes to swapping phones - either in an upgrade situation, or fault-finding. Swapping a physical SIM is a 2minute job, moving an eSIM is either difficult, protracted or impossible.

Edited to add that "I've accidentally deleted my eSIM" posts quite often popup on this forum - it's a tad trickier to "lose" a physical SIM, although some users still somehow manage it.
