I have just received my new Samsung 22. through the post . It did not come with a SIM card . I have checked to see if there is a SIM card already in the new phone but it just has a little Sim tray/ holder that says Sim 1 on one side and Sim 2 on the other side .

My old phone is a Sony so my old Sim won’t fit into new phone .

So should I have received a new SIM card for the new phone in the post ?

If you did an upgrade you might not get a new SIM. Your old SIM could suffice if it fits.

Otherwise, Take phone & old SIM into an EE shop with Photo ID & they'll transfer number, any SIM contacts & credit if applicable to a replacement SIM of correct size for free or order a replacement SIM online at Order a replacement SIM for £1.50 or phone CS for one. It will come as a Combi-SIM with all 3 sizes as push-outs.

You likely need a new SIM card for your Samsung S22. Your old Sony SIM won't fit as sizes differ. Contact EE to get a new SIM and transfer your service. Your new phone supports dual SIMs, so you can use two lines if needed.

Many thanks indeed for that advice . I will go into my local EE shop and get it sorted .
