Black screen - cannot now use phone

My phone (Samsung) was working yesterday and then went into an infinite loop of trying to start. After approx. an hour of this it now has a black screen and is unusable in it's current state. Any suggestions? I have held the on/off button in for 20 seconds with no response and also left the phone plugged in and retried later, also with no response.

Does it restart if you hold the power and volume down buttons for 20 seconds?

No...nothing

Have also plugged in to charge and then re-tried with no luck
