Weird thing happened out of the blue yesterday. My tv screen, which is set to 1080p resolution, suddenly changed to about half the size as usual. Centered in the screen but tiny. Screen reverts back to full size if I set resolution to 720. Changing the screen size on the TV itself does nothing. Help please?

It’s usually a one-off, and rights itself if you exit and renter the affected device, or even just the app.

But we need a bit more detail. What TV, make and model? What were you watching at the time, from what source?

If the source was an EE TV box, which one?

But I’m guessing UHD?

Try unplugging the TV from the mains for two minutes, and then reconnecting it.

My guess is that the TV is getting a 1080p picture from the box and displaying it on its UHD screen without upscaling it, which makes it a quarter of the size of the screen.

Meaning it’s the TV that wants the KUTA, not the box 😛

I'm sure the model number/name is somewhere on the back but I'm recovering from knee surgery and can't go through the shenanigans it takes to get to the back right now. Great time for the tv to act up! I bought the tv in 2011 so it's probably time to replace it. It was high-end at the time.

Anyway, tried unplugging, waiting, plugging back in, changing settings to both 1080i and 1080p. Same thing - mini screen. Very irritating!

What TV, make and model? (We now know Samsung, 2011 probably. To save your knees, the model number should probably be an item in the System or Support menus, or some menu anyway, so you shouldn’t need more than pointing the remote to find it).

2. What were you watching at the time, from what source?

3. If the source was an EE TV box, which one?

4. If it wasn’t, what was it?

A long shot, but given the age of the TV has the remote got an ASPECT button on it? Try cycling through that

Ha, no such luck. It's new enough to have menus, etc, and a place to set screen size. I've been through every combination with the resolution set to 1080p or 1080i (no idea the difference is but I've always used 1080p). No go. Thanks tho.

I’m not sure which device you are changing the resolution on, but I’m assuming the Mini box, because a 2011 TV probably doesn’t offer much choice apart from 4:3 and 16:9, and maybe one or two intermediate variants on that.

I can see how an HD picture can go quarter-sized on a UHD TV, but what’s happening on yours, I have no idea.

Can you try a different HDMI cable, see if that helps?

I'll have a dig around and see if I have one, I think I do. I've unplugged it and replugged it to no avail. The tv picture comes in fine when it shrinks, it's just tiny! It's just bizarre. Back tomorrow.

Mystery solved! Dug around and found a different HDMI cable, which of course was too short for me to use without tons of impossible shenanigans with my current knee situation so I thought I'd just try switching the cable to a different HDMI input on the tv. And it worked! Thanks so much for guiding me to the cable, which led to the connector on the tv. Never would have thought that was it as the mini picture was good and clear, just tiny. But there we are, eh? I'm good to go now and get back to recovery! Thanks again!
