Is your soundbar connected to the optical socket of the box, or the TV?

If you are using the box's socket, the remote needs to be set to 'set top box' to control the volume of the soundbar, but you then can't use it to turn the TV on and off.

If you are using the optical socket of the TV and the remote is set to 'TV', it can turn the TV on and off, but it doesn't control the volume of the soundbar directly. The remote controls the volume of the TV, which in turn should pass the volume change instructions to the soundbar. You might need to play around in the TV's sound settings to get it to work as you expect it to.

Remote Control Issue

Hello,

I have recently joined EE and having issues with my remote control. I am finding that I can not have my EE remote control the volume and power status of my TV.

After messing with the settings I am finding that I can either have it control my volume only and will not turn my TV off or I can have it controlling the TV's power status but it wont control the volume.

I read a guide on line to do the following: Click home > Settings > Connected Devices > Bluetooth Remote.

The guide then says to change the setting from "set top box" to "TV". When I do this, it then lets me turn the TV on and off but will not let me control the volume. If I set it to "Set top box" then it controls the volume but not the power status.

Interestingly, If I place the setting to TV, it lets me turn it on and off, but it flashes a message up to say "This feature control is unavailable" when I try to control the volume. But if I press and hold the home button and the 9 button, it will then allow me to control the volume, but after 2/3 seconds the volume control then stops working again?

I am connected to a Samsung soundbar using an audio optical cable (SPDIF). TV is a Toshiba.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

thank you

Jay

Hello Jones01,

Thank you for your reply.

I have tried the optical cable in both the TV and in the EE set top box and failed with everything I have tried. It's bit late for me at the moment to mess around with it, not long finished work. I do intend to try and give it another go. I just find it odd that I can set it so it turns the TV on and off, and then press home and 9, and it will then change the volume for a couple of seconds and then just stop.

When I have time I am interested to see if I take the sound bar out of mix and just use the TV sound, if it would work. But the sound on our TV speaker is awful, hence we got a soundbar.

At the moment I have it set so it controls the sound but not the power, as the volume control is more likely to be used than power on and off, I may just have to admit defeat and use a separate remote for the power. It's just a pet hate when previous provider remote controlled everything with no issues. I have also noticed the source button on the EE remote does not work whatever I have tried, but I am not bothered about this.

Thanks

Jay

Optical connection cannot carry volume signals, so how are you currently controlling your soundbar volume? Soundbars often have the ability to be trained to use the IR commands that the TV normally accepts, so could you maybe have done this previously? If so, try teaching it again but using the EE TV remote.
