No obvious error and have successfully installed SKY sports app. Would welcome a summary of the procedure I should now follow to watch NOW sports

Your Now TV subscription provides access via the Now TV app and web site - the Sky Sports app isn't included.

I think we are talking at cross purposes. I have syy sports on my EE TV
subscription and understand this allows me to watch NOW sports on laptop
but I cannot tune in

I understand the confusion - Sky sell their products under 2 brands: Sky, or Now TV. It's the same content, but under 2 brands.

The EE TV version of Sky Sports is via the Now TV brand, so you can watch Sky Sports at www.nowtv.com or via the other apps listed on the link I shared above.
