I now gather one cannot get rooming in advance of travel abroad. My query is if I sign up for roaming when I arrive at the airport won’t that immediately trigger that days roaming charge just to sign up?

As per the roaming page -

Look out for a text from EE with instructions on how to buy a roaming pass. Loading the page won't use any of your data.

@FrancisDurrant , if on monthly contract, please make sure that you have roaming enabled on your account before going abroad by texting ROAMING to 150, have a great time there.

As others have said, you don’t get the text message to add a bundle until you land.

The duration begins when you activate the add-on.

E.g. if you added the bundle at 13:18 today for 7 days, it would expire at 13:18 next Friday.

It’s not midnight to midnight (which is good), you get the full duration of your add on.
