I am going to Australia but tied into my phone contract until 2027 and call contract until this August 2025. What are my best options as EE want to charge £25 per week for roaming. I cannot afford that.

you can not freeze it until you come back.

@TreemanOz : That is the cost of roaming in Oz with EE. You could get a local SIM & see if it's any cheaper.

If you are on contract, you may use your usual UK allowances outside the EU with up to 50 GB data per billing month if you have more, when you buy the Zone 1 Pass for £5 / day or £25 / week or already have it as an Inclusive Extra or you have an EE Full Works or EE Max Plan. Otherwise you will need to pay the charges or buy roaming add-ons as set out in https://ee.co.uk/help/mobile/roaming/roaming-costs/countries/australia.

As you are on contract, just remember to text ROAMING to 150 before you leave UK to ensure the roaming ability is enabled on your account.

@XRaySpeX wrote:

@TreemanOz : That is the cost of roaming in Oz with EE. You could get a local SIM & see if it's any cheaper.

For purely in-country use, a local SIM almost certainly will be cheaper - you're using an Australian network in Australia!

Roaming services are intended for residents of the home country taking short trips abroad, not for long-term residents of a foreign country. Thus part of the benefit is that you retain your UK number and the incoming international leg of incoming calls are covered by the billing add-on.
