I travel to the USA for business frequently, I’ve not been able to use mobile to U.K. landline since the summer. This is a known issue with ee, as of my last phone call with them they had no resolution in sight. It also happened in Europe but this has since been resolved. If this is a main factor for you perhaps not worth the cost.

Traveling to the States for 10 days in January and I will be using the phone for business with a requirement for e-mail and some limited downloading. What is my best add on and will it cover me for calls to the UK

you also need to make sure roaming is enabled on your account so you can connect to a roaming network and that’s done by texting ROAMING to 150. The purchasing of add ons doesn’t enable roaming it’s just an add on.

If you are on contract, you may use your usual UK allowances outside the EU with up to 50 GB data per billing month if you have more, when you buy the Zone 1 Pass for £5 / day or £25 / week or already have it as an Inclusive Extra or you have an EE Full Works or EE Max Plan. Otherwise you will need to pay the charges or buy roaming add-ons as set out in https://ee.co.uk/help/mobile/roaming/roaming-costs/countries/usa.
