Hi

My son is travelling in Australia for seven months. What is his best option as regards using EE abroad? I understand there is a monthly roaming pass that allows the UK allowance to be used in Australia. This seems to come in at about £25 per month. Is this the best option?

Kind regards

Tim

For that period of time he is best off getting a local SIM as that will be more compatible and more usable for longer.

Thanks

@Welshy65 : Outside the EU, if you are on contract, you may use your usual UK allowances there with up to 50 GB data per billing month if you have more, when you buy for £25 / billing month or have already as a Inclusive Extra the Roam Abroad Pass or you have an EE Max Plan. Otherwise you will need to pay the charges or buy roaming add-ons as set out in https://ee.co.uk/help/mobile/roaming/roaming-costs/countries/australia.

As he is on contract, he should just remember to text ROAMING to 150 before he leaves UK to ensure the roaming ability is enabled on his account.

For short term visits abroad, the Roam Abroad pass would be quite suitable.

The complication would be the "Stable Links Policy" which broadly requires residence in the UK for 2 months in every 4. It is reflecting the fact that EE is a UK network and their roaming services are intended for UK residents making short trips abroad.

Weigh that up against your son cancelling his contract - assuming he is outside his minimum term - and converting to PAYG for the duration of his visit. If he chooses this option, ensure the PAYG is working as a PAYG before leaving the UK, which requires a clear 30days notice.
