Long term travel - Cancel contract? Any other options

Hi,

I'm going away long term (potentially 18 months or more) I'm currently on a EE pay as you go SIM however when I go abroad I don't plan on using roaming due to the high costs, I will also be in countries where I won't be able to use my SIM and will require international sims for my travels.

What would be the best option to keep costs down? Am I better off cancelling my contract all together and just using international sims whilst away or is there any options to suspend my contract whilst I'm away and re activate once I'm back?

If you are on PAYG, then you are not on what is popularly known as a contract.

PAYG is a pre-payment topup based plan, "contract" is a pay-monthly setup where you receive bills and are tied to a minimum-term.

PAYG SIMs simply need to incur chargeable usage at least once every 6months to remain active. Pay-monthly contracts remain active for as long as the regular monthly payments are maintained. If you're outside your minimum term, you can cancel your monthly contract with 30days notice & transfer to PAYG - providing that 30days notice allows for use in the UK as a PAYG before leaving the UK.

@molliea15 : PAYG isn't a contract as such.

You can keep your costs down while abroad by simply sending a short text to a friend within every 6 months. It should cost more than a £1 each time.
