I've bought a PAYG Sim card, can I receive texts if I don't top it up?

I don't need to pay for this sim card since I already have one.

I only need it for gaming accounts to receive codes and play new games with.

Although it seems that I need to top up my sim to use it. Do I or can I just leave it as it is?

Yes, receiving texts is free worldwide.

I wouldn't assume that. It's been known to receive texts (cuz they're free?) even when in hibernation. You need to make a chargeable call or text or top-up within every 179 days.
