Welcome to the community.

On pay as you go, you need to use the SIM card in the UK to make a call or send a text message before travelling abroad in order to activate it for international roaming. Did you do that?

The SIM won't be activated for roaming until a call is made or a text is sent over the EE network in the UK. Once that's done, it will be activated for any future trips.
