If I have a subscription pack do I also need to keep credit on the account?

This might be a stupid question, but I'm moving to a pay-as-you go EE account and have previously just had contracts for my phone.

I have a subscription pack set to auto-renew - do I also need to maintain a credit balance on my account? E.g., for calls/texts that are not included in the pack? Will that credit expire if I don't use it? It's very rare that I'm calling anything other than a UK number. And I'm only using the EU roaming a few times a year.

Would it be advisable to make sure I also have additional credit on the account when going to the EU?

As to why I went for pay-as-you-go -- the monthly prices are cheaper than the contract deals. If I want unlimited calls & texts, and 25G of data then it's only £15/month on pay-as-you-go, vs £23/month on a 1-year contract. OK, the contract deal has higher data speeds, but that's not something that would make a difference to me.

As long as you are paying for your pack by Direct Card Payment you don't need to maintain a PAYG balance unless you intend to make any out-of-allowance transactions. These could include:

Calls or texts to non-UK nos. from UK.
Calls or texts to nos. other than to UK landlines starting 01, 02 or 03 or UK mobiles starting 07.
Buying stuff on sites by Charge to Bill.

Roaming in the EU is included on PAYG.

If you do keep a balance it does not expire until you spend it.
