Call a UK from a UK number in Italy

I am in Italy. I have an EE pay as you go phone as does my wife. We can call all Italian numbers, text and access data. We are not able to call one another. One phone message says number not registered and the other phone just attempts to connect, clicks and ends call. Call abroad add on is on as well as Roaming. We are using +44 prefix and adding or dropping the (0) and nothing works.

What could possibly be the issue?

@BMahoney Why do you have that add on you can use your PAYG pack allowance or your credit on your account while there and that add on is to call to Italy from the UK. Can you please explain what you mean by roaming is on ? There isn’t an option within your EE account to enable roaming it’s automatically on as you are pre pay customers.

Try dropping the + and just put 44 and don’t use the 0

Thank you for the quick reply. I did try with and without the plus. What worked was to call a local Italy number - a random number - and then call our other UK number and it connected. A local person here made the suggestion. For what ever reason that worked and we can call one another.
