Changing your phone whilst keeping your existing number is known as an "upgrade" which, technically, isn't available on PAYG.

Any new PAYG phone you buy from EE will come with a new number on the SIM. What you can do is just transfer your existing SIM across to your chosen new phone, it's the SIM which holds your number, credit etc.

What you do with the new SIM, number & compulsory credit is upto you. Alternatively, if you buy your chosen phone "SIM-free" from another retailer, you won't be paying for compulsory credit.

By using your old SIM in your new PAYG phone you lose the PAYG credit that came with the new phone. That's why it's never a good idea to buy a PAYG phone from EE, with its mandatory credit, when you already have a PAYG SIM from EE. Better to buy a SIM-Free phone outright from somewhere like Amazon.

Alternatively, particularly if you used up all or most of your credit on your old SIM, is to ask CS to transfer your existing no. to your new SIM.
