I think you need to be a lot clearer on what you're referring to by "satellite" - EE's radio network does not use satellite technology.

If you have an external antenna, this is not specific to any individual radio technology (2G, 4G, 5G) but will be tuned to specific frequency bands. Some frequency bands are used by specific "G", others are shared.

Your MikroTik router will have support for specific radio technologies & frequencies, this may be the limiting factor here. Equally, as one of my previous posts mentioned, the data speeds attainable from a particular band/tech are very roughly calculated by "available capacity" divided by "amount of usage" - thus the fix for this is to either... increase capacity, reduce usage or find a technology where the maths are more favourable.

I have been a Small Business customer in the SY13 area for about 2 years, and ignoring the fact I cannot manage my account online (EE still haven't fixed the issue), I constantly have network issues.

My setup is Dyfed Telecom installed a Satellite on the roof with an EE 4g SIM. The satellite is aimed at the new 5g cell tower mast near Prees Heath.

My partner and I work from home full time, and we have airbnb guests, so reliable network is important to us.

Some hours we can get between 20-30mb download and similar upload. This is way better than BT or Sky broadband (6-8mb), but then mid-day until 9/10pm the speeds bounce between 6-15mb download.

We are not a busy city, yet traffic on the mast consumes the network, and I'm at a loss what to do. Joining Teams calls becomes painful and sounds like we are R2D2. Streaming TV shows takes forever.

Does anybody out there have any guidance they can provide on how to ensure our network doesn't get impacted by this ridiculous clog of traffic?

Dyfed tried testing pointing the satellite towards Wem, Shrewsbury and even 2 in Whitchurch. The Prees Heath gave the best signal but it's entirely unreliable on speeds. It's 100% not the equipment as that's all been replaced by Dyfed thinking that was the cause. It's 100% EE and traffic on the mast.

I presume your reference to satellites and 5G is a terminology thing, all of EE's sites are multi-technology and carry combinations of 2G, 4G & 5G across different frequency bands. Low-bands provide better coverage whilst high-bands provide more capacity.

The speeds you describe should be quite capable of video-streaming upto 1080/HD standard, which broadly requires perhaps 3-4Mb/s depending on source. You're otherwise just at the mercy of varying traffic levels.

The resolution for slow data speeds is to either reduce the load on your serving site/sector, or to increase the capacity available from it it.

I apologise for not knowing the right technical jargon. I'm a customer who is only using the terms EE and Dyfed have referenced.

Streaming isn't my main issue. We work from home, and 3mb doesn't suit a Teams or Zoom call.

Do you have a solution or just commenting for the sake of commenting?

Does an EE handheld phone achieve similar speeds to your in-home setup?

That would further demonstrate whether the variable speeds are due to network-side loads, or an in-home issue. If they're network-side, then the fix is network-side also.

That is an unknown. I do not have EE mobile for any other device. Our personal mobiles are Vodafone and Three.

Dyfed, however, stated they constantly have to battle traffic load issues with EE who say they won't investigate or upgrade masts because they claim it is too expensive. I am told users just have to accept the inconsistency, despite the fact we aren't even near any major cities.

Hi @cotonestate

Our tech guides will have a process they have to follow when looking at any reports of signal problems, and it will involve trying the SIM in another device to rule out other possibilities and get to what is happening.

I understand what you are saying about what Dyfed Telecom are telling you, but our team need to follow the steps themselves and cannot just take word from a third party when it comes to network performance.

The best option would be to contact them again and follow the steps that they suggest so that they can get this looked at further.

Who has marked this as a solution??

Thanks for the tip. It would have to be Dyfed who contact EE on my behalf while on the roof with the sim card swapped. I dont have this option to climb up and swap it.

I will share with them your recommendation and when they've been able to take action and it works...then this would be a solution

I've had Dyfed Telecom come visit again to see if they can troubleshoot my unstable network. They have identified the issue - while my sim card is up to 5G capable, the satellite dish (MikroTik) is only 4G. However it can handle up to 100mbps.

We did a number of tests over a couple hours, and speeds fluctuated between 9mpbs and 23mpbs download (30-40 upload).

They tested on a 5G satellite dish (which wasn't available when I first started with Dyfed & EE), and download was 129mbps!

So the issue is not the sim card - and it's not the satellite - it's the 4G network coming from the local mast.

Does anybody have any tips on how to approach this now with EE? There is too much traffic on the 4G network and that's why my network is unstable.

We can only refer to the terms we're provided by suppliers.

To help you understand what I mean by "satellite" is that it's a dish on my roof. Much like what we would call a TV satellite in America, or a TV Aerial in the UK. It's a dish, pointed towards a cell mast.

I never said anything about EE radio network or EE using satellite technology. I said I have an EE sim card installed in a satellite dish that uses EE's network.

I'm sorry, but your responses are not very helpful. I think I prefer Michael_D who actually provides solution ideas.
