Basics first.

Voice calls, texts & mobile data all use the same network signal. WhatsApp, BBC News, Messenger, etc - all these are internet-apps and just need an internet connection to function. That internet connection can be WiFi or mobile data.

So... does your phone show a mobile network signal? If it doesn't, and other phones in the same location do, try a 2way SIM-swap.

Put your non-working SIM in a working phone, what result?
