Not connecting to a network

My son came back from Holland. His phone worked when in Holland but as soon as back in uk he can. It make or receive calls. Any suggestions? He has tried turning off and leaving for a while. Turning airplane mode off and on etc but no luck.

Could you check to make sure his phone is in the 'automatic' network selection mode please?
