They don't really. It's stated in the terms and conditions. https://ee.co.uk/content/dam/ee-help/Termsandconditions/network-terms-tcs/PAYM-Network-Terms-v7-b4-FINALdate.pdf

Freely available online to any customer or potential joiner. Customers might as well just get on with it. It's not nice but it's pretty straight forward. The network is legally covered and all customers will have to pay it. It's the same as all the other major mobile networks. Ultimately people will vote for their feet. But I'd be pretty certain people will still join EE, Vodafone etc and they won't lose that many customers. I am on sim only with a small network with no price increase but if you want the top end iphone on the network I am on, you can't get it. Most people can't afford to buy an iphone 14 or Samsung S22 outright so go on contract. Customers are acting like it's a bolt of the blue. EE always stated they'd charge a price increase based on the CPI rate of inflation plus 3.9%. The rate of inflation published in January by the ONS was 10.5 so the increase is 14.4%. it's 100 legally watertight. People might question the ethical aspect of mid contract price increases but that is ultimately for ofcom to adjudicate on in the long term as the regulator but basically any customer who asks for a manager in order to complain about the price increase, will simply get deadlocked and be asked to go to the regulator, the ombudsman. The regulator will say it's stated in the terms and conditions, nothing we can do about it. I've done it myself with different suppliers. EE have not moved the goalposts so it's not unfair. If the CPI rate of inflation was 2% which is actually the government target (probably unrealistic though), the price increase would be much more palatable for customers at 5.9%. Interestingly, anyone that starts their contract whether it be an upgrade or additional line in March, will not be affected this year in April so perhaps rather than complain might be worth thinking more cleverly about how to work around it or move to another network that doesn't implement price increases which is hardly nobody.

I've just had the email that you are now cashing in on the cost of living crisis by smashing a massive 14.4 % increase on my bill.

Its absolutely disgusting, at a time when people are struggling to eat and heat their homes you decide to hit us with that ridiculous increase, not just a few % you up it by 14.4%

Its sick and I'll never be using EE again when this contract ends, I'll also be going out of my way to warn other people from using you, there's absolutely no justification in a hike like that, its pure greed and you should be ashamed.

You're a disgrace!

EE Price Hike

Next time you come to renew your broadband, phone etc with these rip off merchants think very carefully what they have done to you ie price 10% plus put their own 4% on a whopping 14% price hike whilst average earnings barely top 5%.Absolute disgrace in such hard times and methinks people will remember and go elsewhere to a more sympathetic company if there is one! EE Should be ashamed of themselves leeching off the poor

Hi @Phil071

Many providers will change their prices at any time during customers’ contracts with them. We have been upfront about our price changes when customers agreed to their contract, and we are using CPI as a measure for these increases.

Our customers rely on us for connectivity more than ever, it’s crucial we continue to invest in our networks, services and the latest technology.

You are missing the point Chris. Yes we know other providers are doing the
same thing and your argument about reinvestment is ludicrous. Why not take
a proactive approach and not charge the extionate amounts to help everyone
going through one of the worse poverty stricken events in modern time? I am
sure you will get more customers?
Please don't insult all EE customers with your rhetoric!

Phil

Sooner ofcom put a end to this disgusting behaviour from phone companies the better. What contract do you know that you would sign that would allow companies to falsely advertise an initial price to lure people in and then jack up the prices annually with short notice. They make millions in profits every year and they have audacity to claim they are struggling... Scam artists, it's like a cartel.

I actually went back to what EE sent me when I took out a contract last month, it illustrates the CPI increase as this:

"Example Calculation

If CPI were 2.4% (this is the average of all CPI figures 2019-2022 inclusive), the total price increase would be 6.3%. If your monthly plan price was £30/month, it would increase to £31.89 after that change. Out of bundle charges and add-ons would also increase by this rate, so in this example 6.3%. See our terms and conditions (https://ee.co.uk/help/help-new/terms-and-conditions/home/home-network) and https://ee.co.uk/help/help-new/billing-usage-and-top-up/price-increase/price-increase for more information."

Given that CPI hasn't been near the average for months - why are they sending customers such outdated information, and why is the illustrative increase on the page about CPI increases given as £1 a week? Customers do not pay weekly (unless EE is planning this as an option to increase affordability?) https://ee.co.uk/help/help-new/billing-usage-and-top-up/price-increase/price-increase

Even if you think that this is fine because it's in the contract, you have to be kidding if you think this is well communicated. If you really want to defend EE, ask yourself how other customers will take to such a steep increase and if it means good things for the future of EE.

I would welcome EE to set out clearly their profit/loss and investment separate to the broader Consumer section of the EE accounts, when asking for an increase in charge. Then I'd know what I was paying for. But they do not do this.
