I'll start by saying i don't really know how many things work, be patient.

Before the pandemic i've lived in uk for a year, made my 12 month plan and everything was fine. Then i went back to my home country but i kept the plan active till now.

What i would like to do is to cancel my plan (it's been over 12 months so it's not an issue), but keep the simcard active. Whenever i wanted to use it i would just pay whatever i have to, which i think should be the pay as you go thingy.

In my country, providers allow this as long as you top up something at least once a year or else your card expire.

I talked to ee support but this seems to not be the case, they told me i could only switch to a cheaper plan or issue a 30 days notice for cancellation.

The cheapest plan would be a 10 pounds one with barely nothing, in roaming. I can have a 7€ plan with 50giga here, hence switching plans is not a solution for me.

To sum it up, what i'm asking is: why can't i just keep the simcard active with no plans?

Thank you for your patience

I'm posting this in case i may have misunderstood the support guy or i couldn't explain myself properly.

i kept the plan active till now.

What does that mean? That it was a contract & you paid EE its fee every month, not just by topping-up.

If it is currently on contract, you need to phone EE giving 30 days notice of cancellation & ask for it to be moved to PAYG.

To save the PAYG SIM going into hibernation due to lack of use, just remember within every 179 days (~ 6 months) to make a chargeable action like making a chargeable call or text, topping up or buying a Pack or Add-on, not just using your mins, texts or data from any Pack or Add-on you might have.

Hello,

I'm glad I found this post as this is exactly what I've been wanting to do and EE has not been very helpful. They are automatically moving me to a rolling contract for £19 a month for 40GB on 20 July. My current rolling contract for 2GB is costing me less than £10 but they've told me I can no longer stay on that rolling plan. As I am currently not in the UK, I do not need 40GB of data and I just want to switch to the cheapest pay as you go package and keep my number. I am told that to look at my options I must call 150 or check MyEE which I've done but I am not being given the option to move from pay monthly to pay as you go and calling 150 will cost me £1.88/min roaming charges. I see you mention I can Dial Freephone +44 800 079 8586. Could you confirm it is indeed free to call this number from abroad because I was not given this option by EE?

Thank you

However if you try calling CS on that Freephone no. over Skype it should be free.
