Can upgrade phone but want to leave can I trade in phone to pay off bill

Hi!
so I’ve been given an early upgrade on my current phone however my contact doesn’t end till December.
Ive spotted a better deal for the phone I want to upgrade to however I would have to wait for my contract to end before I can. Is there any way I can trade in my current phone to pay off the rest of the outstanding balance for the phone? The trade in value for my phone is higher than the outstanding balance.

Don’t do that, sell it to CEX or something, and then pay out the contract and keep the difference.

I would but the phone is still under contract, I wasn’t sure if I could trade it in to pay the balance off as I’m looking at leaving

As long as it's been longer than 6 months in your contract, you can do whatever you want with the phone. Sell it privately and don't trade it in is the best bet, you'll be quids in probably.

@Katc77 No you can not. A trade in means you get something in return ie new contract. Why would EE take your device to pay off what you already owe EE.

You can sell the device anywhere and use the cash to pay off the remaining term of the contract.

The phone is still under contact so I can’t trade it in anywhere else. It was just a simple question if I traded it in with them would they take off the remaining balance for the contact of the phone so I don’t have to pay anything and I can end my contact that’s all, I’m not looking to start a new contract otherwise I would just upgrade and keep the phone 😂

Hi @Katc77 ,

You may wish to review the below link regarding trading in and can check with EE whether that information is still valid in preparation for when you own the phone.

Obviously you would not be able to trade in a phone which someone else owns such as before you've paid enough months to own the phone.

Got an old phone or tablet lying around? When you trade in your old device at EE you can use the value towards things like your early upgrade fee, the upfront cost of your new device, new accessories or use it to pay off your next bill.

Never sell to CEX, they offer pittance of what a phone is worth and sell for 100% profit.

Might not seem much but officially that’s a 20,000% mark up 😂😂
