WireGuard VPN

I have seen a couple of times on this forum that people discuss if EE blocks VPN connections, but I am still not sure what the real answer is.

My experience is that a WireGuard VPN connection is blocked when using a phone with an EE sim card as a WiFi hotspot, it works just fine with an Giffgaff (O2) sim card. Furthermore a number of other apps are blocked (like Wechat).

So what is the reality?

Do you intend to run a wireguard server or client, as routability will be a key issue?

Windows 10 IPSec client is known-good on my side.

I use a commercial VPN service, more specifically Mullvad VPN.

All is well when using a Giffgaff SIM card, switch to an EE SIM card and all hell breaks loose, including capability of negotiating a WireGuard key.

Switch back to Giffgaff (O2) and back to normal.

They should be able to identify what is causing the issue.

I am in agreement with the above advice to rely on commercial support which you have paid for.

I suspect the most likely reason for lack of functionality is your APN may be configured for dual-stack IPV4V6 which users have identified as behaving less well that IPv4-only in certain situations.

Your commercial VPN provider may view slide 12 on https://www.ipv6.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2018/11/Nick-Heatley_BT_EE_Update_UKv6Council_201801207.pdf to see how things are supposed to work and whether it will matches what they expect for their IPv6 support (if any).

Any feedback you receive on EE's IPV4V6 behaviour would be useful to other users who encounter related issues with dual-stack on the router.

To save time, most people just add new APN settings to use IPv4-only so they do not need to debug any issue with IPV4V6 dual-stack.

Your reply is very interesting, thank you.

I am happy to report that my VPN (as well as WeChat) seems to work after a discussion I had with EE support.

The suggestion was to add an APN with the following details and, voila, immediately the VPN connected and staid connected:

Name: MMS

APN: eezone

Username: eesecure

Password: secure

MMSC: http://mms/

MMS proxy: 149.254.201.135

I am not sure if it confirms what you are saying, but I would be interested to get your view on what exactly it solved.
