Mobile data in a camper

Hi all.

Is it possible to get a 4g booster for a campervan? I stay in some places with barely any signal.

I don't want a second ee account as I already have 30Gig of data. You can buy 4g WiFi boosters which would work if I can share data allowance with another sim.

Because it isn't an all year round thing I don't want a pay monthly fee for a second sim.

Are there any solutions?

The concept of a "signal booster" is a little misunderstood when you need to have a usable signal in the first place, to boost.

The solution to a poor coverage area is to improve the signal in the first place, or perhaps use an external antenna at a raised elevation.

Yes most 4g WiFi boosters/routers come with an external aerial. I am often in a situation where walking for a few meters away from the van will result in a 4g signal, so it can be pretty local. If there was a way to connect a better aerial to my phone I would do that.

However, my question is - on ee, can I get a free second sim that just uses the same data allowance as my main sim? Then I could put this in the 4g WiFi booster. Otherwise, it would involve taking the sim out of my phone and putting it in the booster/router.

Of course a true 4g booster would not have this issue as it would just retransmit the 4g signal (with no sim) but I am not entirely sure this is legal in the UK.

All EE SIMs come with their own subscription - be it a PAYG or pay-monthly one. If you have a second subscription on an existing pay-monthly account, you can share data between them, but it doesn't negate the need for an additional subscription.

Legal signal boosters do exist, but you're looking at ££ several hundred - they're not an insignificant cost.
