I;m about to buy an EE Home Sim Router, having found that nothing else will do (in my village)

Is there any advantage (as a personal home user, in buying the %G or can I happily exist on the 4G?

Buying a 5G sim router will be future proofing you as 5G will get to your village eventually. Other than that for now, there is none.

Thanks very much - it seems that I should stay with 4g for the moment. Can you tell me whether I can continue with my Grandstream telephone (connected to Sipgate) when I switch? If I can, will the router recognise the unit (or vice versa) or while I have to programme all sorts of numbers (the thought of which terrifies me!)

That I don't know. I'm sure @XRaySpeX will be ablle to help with that though.

If the phone connects to an external IP address rather than a local IP address in the SIP SERVER settings(on the phone), then in theory all will be good. Otherwise in the router if it has setting for port forwarding, SIP uses normally (although this can also be changed, your SIP provider can tell you this) port 5060. The router may also have ALG passthru, and may have to be disabled or enabled to create a working link between your phone and the SIP server
