BT is going to dump the 3G network in the next year or so. I have an elderly, not smart, not touch-screen, SIM-only, Nokia 6300 - an 'unknown device' as far as EE is concerned. I have poked around on the phone, but cannot see whether it is 4G compatible, or only 3G. Any idea how I can find out, please?

Hi @kernowhoop

Is your handset the 2007 or 2021 version. If 2007 then it's not 4G.

I wouldn't worry about 3G as it's going nowhere for a couple of years. .

Thanks

Thank you very much. Definitely not the 2021 version! It is in fact, rarely used, but a beautiful little phone. I take encouragement from your thoughts about the disappearance of 3g, however.

Sent from Mail for Windows 10

David

The ,2G Services (GSM900 and GSM/PCN1800) won't be able to be switched off before 2025 under the agreed International Roaming Agreements, so there is no way that 3G Services will be switched off untill way after then.

What may happen is the T Mobile Service will be closed within the next year or so, but the EE Network will still cater for a 3G Service under the EE Banner.

Also over time before closing 3G again what will probably happen is more of the 3G Spectrum will get refarmed for 4 & 5g the side effect of that will mean less Bandwidth for Data, but Voice and Text will still be covered.

I would agree with @Northerner that your be fine for quiet a few years yet

3G will be gone by the end of 2023. Good riddance as well. I remember being an early adopter on Three with one of those nasty NEC phones and all I got was walled garden rubbish.

https://newsroom.bt.com/ee-to-offer-5g-solutions-across-the-entire-uk-as-bt-group-unveil-new-mobile-and-convergence-ambitions/
