When will EE cease selling locked phone as from December 2021 it will be illegal

I am due an upgrade currently and am having to say no as I use a dual sim in my IPhone for work and currently I would have to wait 6 months of having a new phone before I can unlock it. Given the ofcom ruling recently selling carrier locked devices will be illegal in the uk from December 2021. When will EE stop selling carrier locked phones and will their be a change in unlock policy so contract customers who upgrade can unlock any devices immediately leading up to December 2021 which is 0nly 5 months away.

The answer to that is in your question.

EE will stop when it becomes illegal.

This is what you need to go by as you will not get an answer either way. EE will not confirm when they will stop.

@Sehafr I had the S21 Ultra in January and it isn't locked to EE.

@Profile closed I think Samsung went down the route of not allowing networks to lock them from S20 but don't quote me on that.

I don't buy my phone's from networks anymore.

So if I buy a handset before December 2021 and it’s locked are they duty bound to unlock it for me from December onwards regardless of how long I have had the phone ?

No, @Sehafr , they are only duty bound to sell as unlocked all phones sold after Dec. 2021. The ruling only applies to devices sold after Dec. 2021.

Well guess when the new iPhone is released I will upgrade with a reasonable company, just lost a customer. Congrats EE for being a mobile dinosaur

It’s will be EE being anti customer as networks still operating this practice are in the minority

Just because the Phone or Device will be sold Network Unlocked, doesn't necessarily mean it won't have Firmware Restrictions or locked Firmware to a particular Network.

It still maybe the case that Networks will not be selling Global Version Phones but just selling Unlocked Devices with their own Network preferred Firmware, if that's the case you will be able to use any Network SIM but it may not behave in the same way as it's Global Version model on a different Network.

This is already happing in other Countries, especially in the Router Market, when Devices are sold either Branded or Unbranded are Network Unlocked but have restrictive Firmware on board

I think your over complicating the point in my comment. By not allowing someone to unlock a phone on the 1st of dec when purchased before vs if they had waited to buy on the 1st why on earth would anyone upgrade leading up to the 1st. It is in EE’S interest to act in the best faith of their customers or accept that customers will jump ship to a network more focused on customer satisfaction. Their choice, my choice.

Quiet possibly but my post was just a broad statement on how things may pan out after December, I didn't refer to EE or make any comment on possible EE,s current or future policies.

My point being that a lot of folk who request Unlock Codes from there Networks then believe that they have in effect a Global Version Phone or Device, which isn't always the case, to be able to slap any Sim in a Network Unlocked Device can sometimes just be half the story.

Depending what happens after December may or may not twist me to change my views, but as it stands I have always advised peeps who maybe thinking about keeping there Device to use on another Network after being purchased Network Locked to reconsider there options and buy a Manufacture Network Free Phone or Device in the first place.
