topic using older phone in Archived Posts

I have bought a new OPPO phone which is too cumbersome and has far too many apps and procedures [ I am in my eighties] . I have realised that my original phone which is an ancient Sagem [ orange vintage] is more to my liking-- tough and tiny. In trying to re register the old phone as a new number I am told by a nice young lady called Zoe that I need to 'unlock it'. what does that mean?

@femart : Where did you yourself get this device itself originally? Did you buy it yourself new direct from EE or from a 3rd-party reseller or is it 2nd-hand? The unlocking process & costs are different. Was it originally on contract or PAYG?
