Apps being restricted on Android APN but not iPhone?

I got a issue where streaming from my Home PC to my phone is being restrticted on Android mobile and one app being blocked.

Example; Rainway.

When launching rainway on S21/S10, its unbale to connect to PC

Put my SIM into my Iphone 7, Rainway works no issues.

If i turn my on VPN on my android phone while connect to EE, Rainway works.

If I connect to work wifi - rainway works.

APN settings have been reset on phone.

So, any idea why apps being blocked on Android APN mobile data?

Also, EE oppo user got same issue - app would not connect

EE Iphone 11 user got no issues

Note 10 Vodoafone user got no issues

Pixcel 5 Vodafone user got no issues

All off the above users connected to my PC

So, EE are blocking some apps and steam link work a lotfaster on Vodafone as well

Streaming from a PC to a mobile is a WiFi connection and so has nowt to do with EE.

How is the PC connected to the Net?

PC not the the issue but it's connected via 1Gb ethernet.

Just to recap

Android+EE mobile network (MN) = issues.

iPhone+EE MN = no issues

Android+EE (MN) with VPN on = no issues.

Android phones on Vodaphone MN = no issues

So from my testing of 6 different phones, I only have issues with Android phones using EE mobile network, restricting or blocking data.

Is this a apn setting issue, as EE set the APN differently on iPhones.

As best I can remember, the APN used for EE mobile data is the same regardless of mobile OS - iOS & Android don't use different ones.

From my understanding of your post, you are only having issues with one specific app and not with mobile data in general. Is that correct?

What 1Gb ethernet? Do you mean FTTP Broadband?

As far as I can see you are running your Internet games on your PC over the Net & using Rainway to play them on your mobile devices over WiFi. Therefore EE, APNs & mobile networks are not involved.

Anyway the APN on all your EE devices will be identical. So that's a red herring.

Hi so far, only one app is being blocked, others seem to be slower, with 1-8mbs steaming rate (like Plex for example) but can transfer/backup files at 15-30mbs.

I'm not using wi-fi on my phone, I'm using EE mobile network.

I am 20 miles away from home and I'm using it during night shift, so EE network are not congested at 3am for example)

My confusion is, why am I having issues my with my EE mobile on Android phones but not iPhone? (I am using the same SIM card. So I take it out of one phone and put it in the other. Each time devices are turned off for a clean boot up)

Or if turn on my VPN on Android (which hides what type of data is being transmitted), it works straight away?

Does the Android phone have other background apps running, that are using data bandwidth?

It sounds like you may need to disable all mobile data permissions to all apps except the one you are actively using, in order to diagnose this further.

It may cause some error messages from background apps that are trying to connect to data but are unable to - that could be considered part of the testing process.

Could be a EE IPV6 issue, is it possible to change the IPV6 or IPV6/4 to IPV4 Only in the Phones APN Settings.

@EssexBoyEE Nope what works on the iPhone should work on the android. Especially because it’s the same SIM card.

I did do some research on EE site and they do provide APN settings for Android but iphone APN are not listed, as these as controlled by EE directly (going off https://community.ee.co.uk/t5/4G-and-mobile-data/EE-APN-Settings-Where-to-find-them/td-p/741851).

A lad I work with, he just got a Oppo EE phone in the last 2 weeks and he has the same issue - launch rainway app on phone and it cannot connect but turn VPN on the phone, it works.

What did find find out, if I we connect to each other Hoptspot, rainway works and our data speeds increase by 3-5mbs. (this has really got us confused)

So I/we ran a speed tets on our phones; I get 11mb download & 4mbs up, he runs same speedtest connect to my phone hotspot, he geta an average, 15 down & 5.5 up (4 tests ran).

I ordered a Vodafone sim to try and see whats happens. If i have no issue with Vodafone, then I know its EE systems and if I do have issues, then its Android 11 (some how).

Missed this comment on the above APN link:

Some websites that claim to be IPv6 compliant don't work on EE 4g unless you set the phone to run IPv4 only (in the APN settings). Examples of affceted websites are www.tolkiensociety.org and www.qustodio.com and the qustodio app. There are many more.

I am no expert, but it seems to me that it would be useful if EE 4g would 'automatically drop down' from IPv6 to IPv4 if a website fails to work on IPv6.

Wonder if that why I been having issues? (Android handles IPv differantly than Iphones?)

Created new APN set to only use IPv4 and it works with no issues! 🙂

So iphones on EE and Vodafone must be set to use IPv4 - very interresting.
And my speed gone up (but that could just timeing and other factors)

@GGMan iPhones use IPv6 over IPv4 and users of EE have issues changing to IPv4 with the iPhone. I can send you a profile to force IPv4 on iPhones.

Thanks but I got no issues on the iPhone, it was just Android phones that were not working correctly.
