Personal Hotspot option disappeared

Just upgraded to iPhone 12 pro and my personal hotspot option has disappeared. Can anyone help? I’ve trawled them Apple support sit and got no answers

Hi @Karl37,

Welcome to the EE Community. 🙂

To activate your personal hotspot, go to Settings > Mobile Data or Settings > Personal Hotspot.

If you can't see the option, please reset your network settings. (Go to Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings)

my hotspot option disappeared 2 days ago. i've tried everything you say here but it still has not come back. new iPhone se 2nd gen

Thanks for coming to the community.

Have you checked for a software update?

You can do this within Settings > General > Software Update

Also, did you reset your network settings on the iPhone?

last update 14.4 and yes i did try resetting network settings and all things suggested above but hotspot still not there.

Have you tried restarting your iPhone, to do this press and quickly release the volume up button, press and quickly release the volume down button, then press and hold the side button. When the Apple logo appears, release the button and see if Personal Hotspot shows?

hi leanne,

yes i've rebooted both iPhone (although not with volume buttons being involved) several times now trying out the suggestions above and rebooted MacBook to see if iPhone hotspot is there with each try. all to no avail

i updated my data to 100gb recently and bought a new iPhone se 2020 just before for which i was sent a new nano sim (i lost the original from other se) could this pose the problem? ever since new sim/updating data it's not worked well, throwing me off hotspot, taking ages to show up, and now gone altogether

hi leanne_t,

i have spoken with an ee tech person. he tried refreshing my new contract from ee end, reboot phone after and resetting my phone altogether after an iCloud backup obviously, and it has not rectified the problem. it still remains the same. so waiting to see if there's anything else we can try. it's odd but my hotspot doesn't appear at all on my iPad and only appears now and again if i turn hotspot on and off on my laptop.

it remains a mystery.

Just to confirm, is it the option in your iPhone settings to activate the hotspot that has disappeared, or is it that your connected devices can no longer see the hotspot connection?

hi james,

it's disappeared from my devices. it doesn't show as an option on my MacBook pro unless i turn hotspot on an off several times on the iPhone, then throws me off when it decides to and sometimes won't let me join coming u with a box saying can not join at this time run diagnostics, or the box says unable to tether. it doesn't show up at all on my iPad as an option.

Hi @sioux23,

The next step to try would be to access your list of WiFi connections on both affected devices and 'forget' your phone's hotspot. Once you have done that, please search for WiFi networks and reconnect.

i have done what you suggested and given it a few days to see what happens. since 'forgetting' my iPhone from wifi options and rejoining it my iPad now recognises it at all times no matter what BUT my MacBook pro is behaving in the same way as described above and needs me to turn hotspot on and off until it sees it, with the phone left open on settings personal hotspot otherwise if i close it to do something else on my phone it disappears! i hadn't noticed that as a thing before but there it is. strange.

macbook has always recognised my hotspot for years but now isn't since a new nano sim, contract with ee, iPhone in january. that's where it all started.

Hi @sioux23,

A change of SIM card wouldn't affect your ability to use your hotspot, which is working as it should on other devices.

Apple Support are best placed to look into why your MacBook is losing connection to your iPhone.
