Yes I definitely have the +33. I can make a phone call using the contact but not sms or WhatsApp

Have you tried the option to send a new message and keyed it in manually?

If both WhatsApp and texts are affected, this would usually suggest something wasn't quite right with the contact rather than an account setting at our end.

Also what phone are you using? 😊

Have you been able to send texts to this number previously?

As mentioned, WhatsApp is just an internet-app and usage of it proves your phone has a working internet connection - nothing more.

No I haven’t messaged this number before.

But my husband can message from his phone on the same WiFi

Yes have keyed the number in manually too.

using an iPhone 16.

seems strange that I can make a call but not send an sms. Must be something in my settings

Thanks for confirming all of that @u748894.

If you go to your Settings and select Phone > Dial assist, is this feature on or off?

This helps to automatically recognise the country code for a number when calling and correct any issues, but I'm not 100% sure on it it applies to messages.

If possible it could be worth getting this number to initiate a message with, and then see if you're able to reply directly.

That will rule out the possibility of it being down to formatting 😊
