How do I get mobile data so I can use google maps when I’m out and about in Australia & NZ?

Outside the EU, if you are on contract, you may use your usual UK allowances there with up to 50 GB data per billing month if you have more, when you buy for £25 / billing month or have already as a Smart Benefit the Roam Abroad Pass or you have an EE Max Plan. Otherwise you will need to pay the charges or buy roaming add-ons as set out in https://ee.co.uk/help/mobile/roaming/roaming-costs/countries/australia.

If you are on contract, remember to text ROAMING to 150 before you leave UK to ensure the roaming ability is enabled on your account.

If you are on PAYG, make sure you have used your PAYG SIM to make a call or text in the UK.

Hello lovely this may be a very thick question. I've bought a roaming pass for my time in oz. Do I now turn on data roaming?

Fundamental is to enable roaming on your SIM - this unlocks access to foreign networks. Without which, you won't get coverage abroad. Text ROAMING to 150 before leaving the UK.

Data roaming is then just a menu option on your phone which allows mobile data usage whilst roaming. Doing the latter without having mobile network coverage abroad will be futile.

Yes, you turn data roaming on your phone only if you want to use data while in Oz. Otherwise if you don't want to use data but only calls & text, you don't.
