I paid £40 before leaving for an overseas trip and was unable to make it receive calls.

Top up your credit? This doesn't allow you to make roaming calls etc.

Did you turn roaming on?

I paid for data roaming whilst abroad. I did turn roaming in but it didn’t work. I could only connect via Wi-Fi which was only when I could access it!!

Your phone settings?

This doesn't turn on roaming on your EE account.

You need to turn that ok as well Via your MyEE account or calling EE

The phone's data roaming setting is often confused, but all it does is to allow the phone to use mobile data whilst roaming.

It does not enable the roaming facility on the SIM itself - which is what allows a connection to foreign networks. This can only be done either via CS or by texting ROAMING to 150 before leaving the UK. Unfortunately the online option was removed sometime ago.
